Getting kids their exercise back
August 14th, 2007 by Babs

Okay, I admit that Richard Simmons has a tendency to be rather annoying. But back in the day he was one of the few REAL exercise gurus and I loved him. What he’s trying to accomplish here is excellent, as far as I’m concerned. Hell, I live in a town whose school system has cut back exercise to two half an hour periods a day, then removed “treats” because they don’t want the kids to get fat. *rolls eyes*

ETA: That should read “two half an hour periods a week”, not “day”. Thanks neitherday!

What was it before? Where I grew up, we had never had more than 1 hour of gym per day in grade school or middle school. And in high school, we were only required to take 1 year of gym and could avoid it entirely the other 3 years.

*is embarassed* That should read “a week”, not “a day”.

In Cambridge, I was required to take gym (or dance) each year of high school, twice a week.

Minuteman may have an entirely different setup compared to Arlington, but Ben had to take it last year and is required to take it this year. The only way he can opt out is if he takes a foreign language, but that option is only available to those with IEPs.

Ah-ha. That makes more sense. I’m shocked that foreign language isn’t even an option for all students. I feel at this point it should be a requirement.

What saddens me is the choice of languages available. They need to be updated to reflect what non-English languages are being spoken in this country, IMHO.
