What a Small Businees Owner Should Not Do in this Economic Situation
Jun 19th, 2009 by Babs

<div class=\"pavatar\">What a Small Businees Owner Should Not Do in this Economic Situation</div>

The economy sucks. You know it. I know it. So, as a small business owner, this is what I’m not going to do about it:

  • I will not introduce any new product… unless it has been well researched and I see that there is a definite demand for it.
  • I will not increase my marketing budget. Making more folks aware of my presence will not necessarily increase my sales. Instead I will keep my budget as is and use cheap and creative methods to draw attention.
  • On a related note: I will not use the word “stimulus” in any form of advertising. If it hasn’t helped the  economy, it sure as hell isn’t going to help me. I’m so sick of the word that if I see it in an ad one more time I swear I’m going to scream!
  • I will not cut my prices. I offer quality goods at fair prices, and will not devalue them (or myself) by price slashing.
  • I will not treat my customers like shit. This is, IMHO, the most important. Yet it is the one thing most businesses (large and small) seem to have forgotten. In this economy customers are looking to get the most out of their money. Being treated well is part of it, and being polite doesn’t cost me a dime.

Greetings from Under My Rock

<div class=\"pavatar\">Greetings from Under My Rock</div>

I’d like to welcome all the friends and family members who found me on Facebook and ventured over. Hopefully my blog posts won’t be too scary.

I’ve been incredibly busy lately. I’m a big fan of Flylady.net and this month I added a buttload of chores to my to-do list. I’ve managed to tweak my schedule enough to get most of the stuff done, but there have been a few sacrifices. Like posting, reading posts, and fanfic writing. Hopefully they will be only temporary sacrifices.

As some of you may already know, I’ve been taking an online class in business management through Minuteman. That’s the school Ben goes to (and will hopefully graduate from this year). I’m about halfway through. It’s amazing how much I already know.

I’ve been crocheting like a mofu (the preteen and I decided “mofu” is the proper abbreviation of  “mother fucker” *laughs*) since I received word that the “Library Ladies” will most likely have a table at Town Day again. I’ve got just under 5 months to make stuff, though I plan on finishing out this month by finishing the skirt I’ve been working on. My goal is to have the scarves that everyone went nutso over last Xmas, arm warmers, possibly some animal hats, and bunny slippers. I took advantage of A.C. Moore’s sale yesterday and stocked up on a ton of yarn — all at the lowest prices I’ve seen. I also picked up a hook set that has ergonimic handles for easier crocheting (at half price). I find it hard to keep my stiches consistent due to the narrow hook slipping in my hands as I work. I’ll have to re-time how long it takes me to make things to see if I need to reconsider prices.

Somewhere in the middle of all this I’ve managed to lose some weight. I’m now down to 163 pounds, with a body fat percentage of 28.7%. Just 6.7 points to go! Now that we have a local bike shop that truly local I am hoping to get my bike’s derailers adjusted so I can start biking again. I miss riding my bike!

Now, it’s time for bed. The boys are home for the week. I need all the rest I can get!

Happy!Babs is Fucking Elated!

Okay.

I promised the preteen that I would replace my piece of crap rebounder this year. Since the Urban Rebounder got good reviews from Consumer Reports and it’s the only decent rebounder that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and is available in the States I figured I’d order one ffrom Amazon.

Monday I was at Kohls, searching for a pair of shoes for a wedding, when I found the Urban Rebounder for $8 more than Amazon. However it came with a DVD with 6 workouts, instead of the 3 that came with the one on Amazon. So, after spending the night contemplating I decided to go back, yesterday, to snag one. The price is now the same as Amazon’s. Woot!

I can’t say how durable it is but it looks to be at least as good a quality as the rebounder it’s replacing. If the preteen and I can get at least a year’s use out of it I will be happy. And the bounce is so much gentler! My knees love it!

Fast forward to today. Iwent online to order my new aquarium light. When I had checked last week the price was $269. Which isn’t bad, for what it is. But then I remembered that I need to get the mounting brackets and new glass tops to replace the current hood set up. Combined with the S&H, I was figuring over $300.

Anyway. I went to place my order and discovered that the lights are on sale. 40% off!. Double woot! So, for less than the price of just the tank light I got the light, the mounting brackets, the glass tops, a 12 pack of filter cartridges, a quart of bio-filter balls, 3 jars of fish food (and a partridge in a pear tree!) and covered the S&H.

Now all I need is for the mechanic to tell me that the Taurus’ transmission only needs some minor (read: cheap) adjustments and my happiness will be off the charts.
