When it rains it pours
May 17th, 2006 by Babs

First literally, now figuratively.

Last night I was informed that someone managed to acquire my business’ check card number and was attempting to go on a spending spree. Luckily they put a hold on the card, however I didn’t find this out until I actually tried to use the card. It was very embarassing to say the least. They cancelled the old card and issued a new one, which I now have to wait for.

Last week, as some of you may remember I had to swap out a bad DVD burner that disliked my Gundam Wing videos. Well the new one seems to be being a bitch, too. Frequently I will take one disk out and put another in and the drive still thinks the original disk is there. It will even run the program if you click it, completely ignoring the disk that IS in there. So, after a week of this I decided I had the time to call Dell again. I spent two hours on the phone with a techie, and despite the fact that the problem started immediately after the drive was installed (when we first tested it the drive wouldn’t acknlowedge any disk until the computer had been rebooted, so we thought the computer hadn’t recognized the drive right away), he insists that it’s a software problem (XP is corrupt), so I now have to back up everything AGAIN, and re-install everying AGAIN.

And to think I chose Dell over home built to avoid this shit!

Of course to add to the madness, I tried to pack up the bad drive to send back and discovered Glenn threw out the return label!

I am so not a happy camper.

If you lived closer to me, my hubby would be more than willing to help you with any computer problems, cheaper and prolly faster than the Dell techies. As for building one, he could build one in his sleep.

I don’t even want to think about that right now. It turns out it wasn’t corrupted software, just BAD software. The reinstall of XP did nothing to solve the problem. However, I noticed that since I removed all the (Dell installed) Roxio programs I haven’t had a problem. I might install the new drive they gave me anyway, and send the current one back with a note.

I can build a computer, myself, too, though I’m sure I’m nowhere near as knowledgeable as your husband. I chose to get a Dell because the one I built three years ago ran fine at first, but during its last few months of life had one problem after another. I just wanted to be able to blame someone else for a change. *laughs*
