My Turn, Now
May 5th, 2009 by Babs

<div class=\"pavatar\">My Turn, Now</div>

Now that I’ve gotten in touch with the important people (who should’ve, in turn, gotten in touch with the other important people) I can make this announcement:

As of 7/1/09 I will no longer be at this address.

We received a letter from our landlord about a week and a half ago stating that, after 18 years, he would not be renewing our lease.

I’ve already sent in an application with the Housing Corp. of Arlington. They have limited units but we mightget lucky. Other than that it’s been Craig’s List. If there’s anything at all listed in the newpaper classifieds, it’s all through realtors. With Craig’s List I can find units for rent by the owners. It makes it easier to find the places that will allow the cats (purr!), too. I am awaiting a return phone call from the boys’ doctor. With a letter from her I can push for a 3 bedroom, which we really need because of the boys don’t kill each other first I’m going to kill them both.

In other news, I’m still tweaking this site. Added Twitter Tools. You can see my latest tweet at the bottom of the page. I did this, and set it up to post a daily archive of my tweets, for those times when I have something to say but writing an entire blog post is more effort than it’s worth. 🙂 I’ve also put back some of the ads I used to have when I first resurrected the site. I’m trying to figure out how to tweak how they’re displayed, so bear with me.

Busy!

<div class=\"pavatar\">Busy!</div>

Still tweaking the site.

I changed the settings on WP Greet Box. If you find them annoying let me know.

I’ve been watching the RSS subscriptions jump up and down. *scratches head* I decided to add the ability to subscribe to receive updates via email. This apparently overrides FireFox’s default setting to make the feed a live bookmark, so if you want to do that, just click the feed icon in the URL box. I’m not too concerned about it, as I know I’m more likely to catch feed updates via Thunderbird’s reader than my live bookmarks. 😛

I’ve “claimed” my blog via Technorati. What with spam blogs becoming all the rage, and my finding much of my content ending up on these blogs, I figured I’d at least make some effort to let folks know that mine is a legitimate blog. I also installed a plugin so that if these blogs continue to auto-post my shit, at least my URL will be provided so readers will know it was harvested.

I will still  continue to crosspost the links to updates until the end of the month to give everyone time to switch over.

Peeking In
Apr 30th, 2009 by Babs

<div class=\"pavatar\">Peeking In</div>

In an effort to streamline my life and (hopefully) make this site a little more constructive, I’ve been making some changes around here.

The first would most likely be the theme. I’ve had a few friends mention that some of the pages backgrounds are headache producing so I switched to one that is more subdued. This one will most likely be temporary, however. While, as a writer, I am a big fan of fluid width themes, the author of this one (Arclite) is in the middle of creating another (fixed width) theme that I found to be absolutely hilarious. He said it was close to being done, so maybe within the next few days…

The other big thing that you may have noticed is the “WP Greetbox” which sometimes pops up at the top of the first page/post you visit, dpending on how you came to the site. It’ll ask you to consider subscribing to the RSS feed and may also suggest you make use of the “Share This” link at the bottom of each post. The former is part of the streamlining I’m doing. As much as I want to I can’t keep up with every web community that I belong to. No, this does not mean I will be leaving speed_fic but you guys have to promise to write more Racercest. I’m going through major withdrawal, here. 🙂

It does mean that I will be cutting back on where I’ll be posting links to my posts. So, yeah. Subscribing to the feed is good. The default for FF users is to bookmark the feed, but if you have the CoLT add-on you should be able to snag it by right clicking the link  and pop it into another client (I’ve been using Thunderbird’s reader). Otherwise you’ll have to go through the bookmark’s properties. IE users (boo! hiss!) will have to deal with Feedburner. I have no idea about Opera, Safari and Google Chrome users.

I’ve also added a popular posts section, as well as a widget that offers suggestions for further reads. And for the LJ fanatics, I’ve added the ability to subscribe to each  post’s’ comments. Like LiveJournal you’ll be able to read (via email) all new comments to a post. Unlike LJ it’s optional and you can change the settings at a later time.  Those, along with “Share This,” should help draw in more visitors and strike up some conversation.

Until I see the final version of the other theme I’m interested in I’m not going to mess with the fonts. If you are having trouble reading (and it’s likely as I am), you can enlarge the text via your browser and resize your browser window so the lines are a readable length for you. This is why I love fluid width themes: they can be tweaked by the end user for their own optimal use.

So. If anyone is having any issues with the changes I’ve made, please let me know. That way I can fix them ASAP.

Testing
Feb 22nd, 2009 by Babs

<div class=\"pavatar\">Testing</div>

I’m testing out a new plug in for WordPress. Since WP has made commenting on another’s comment possible the only thing really missing was the icons. This plug in should take care of that.

I’ve uploaded a few icons that I had been using at IJ/LJ and added a few more. So, does anyone know of software/a place that I can make icons for free?

My Kingdom for a New Theme!
Feb 20th, 2009 by Babs

<div class=\"pavatar\">My Kingdom for a New Theme!</div>

I’ve been spending the last few hours finishing up Maxwell’s site. All the fics have been untagged and recategorized to work with the Multiple Category Selection Widget, with hope that it will make it easier for readers to find their kinks. 🙂 The site is as updated as it’s going to get until we find a theme that screams “Max”. I’m still pissed that roam2rome bailed on her Coffee Desk theme. That was the best one, so far.

On a related note, can anyone tell me the significance of using Feedburner? I was running the feed for Max’ site through them, but Google’s mandatory move kinda fucked things up. If there’s a really good reason (i.e. other than knowing how many subscribers via RSS Max has) I might attempt to fix it. Otherwise I’m going to stick with the original post/comment feeds.

The preteen is grounded again. He just will not leave the ringer on the new phone alone! I hate grounding him (it’s as much punishment for me as it is for him) but I have no idea what else to do.

I picked up the yarn to make the skirt I mentioned in a previous post. One of the good things about Caron Simply Soft is that it has no dye lot. Since the pattern doesn’t give yarn requirements for the big girl sizes I had to estimate. If I run out before I’m finished I can easily get more, without worrying about a chunk of the skirt having a noticeable change in coloration.

We took the boys out to Chipotle for dinner. While the preteen enjoyed his pizza from Subway, the rest of us snarfed down burritos. I still think Boloco is better (and cheaper) but Ben was quite content with his bean-free chicken burrito and bottle if Izze.

Still exercising. Aside from Monday (my shoulder) and Wednesday (Ooo! Shiny!) I’ve been keeping on top of things. Ben was entertaining himself earlier today by poking at my belly and watching it jiggle. I’m at that point were the muscle is starting to get toned, but the skin and the fat still need to catch up. 😛

Now I have to plug in my Sansa Clip (which, I’m told, rivals the Creative Zen Stone and makes the iPod Shuffle fanboys cry) and see if the firmware update solves my recently developed problem with long subscription tracks popping and snapping — something I so enjoy listening to while I’m trying to meditate. Wish me luck!
