A random meeting with the Bishi Harem
November 11th, 2003 by Babs

We were discussing how we are going to create our virtual store. I had already spent several months creating an intricate storefront when I realized I would have to update it frequently. Not an easy thing to do when you can’t code from scratch! So Heero suggested I use several blogs: one for the storefront and each of the “departments”. Why he was making this suggestion instead of say, teaching me to code from scratch so I wouldn’t be in this predicament, is beyond me, but, there you go.
Alas, much to Heero’s dismay (and later James’, due to the pummeling he received for pointing it out), the store’s appearance wouldn’t be consistent. There is only so much tweaking you can do with a Tripod Blog, and making them look identical to the rest of your site isn’t one of the things you can do. Plus I really wanted the maneki neko on the store’s index page!
The thought of embedding the blogs into a core page using iframes like my site’s “What’s News” page died a quick and painless death (they just don’t fit), when Quatre “Have I ever told you I’m your favorite bish?” Winner offered the idea of keeping the iframes, but using them in the traditional way, thus only needing to update the “framed” areas instead of the entire page. I felt like such an idiot for not having thought of this myself, especially when Yusuke reminded me I could be using the same technique for my “What’s News” page. But instead of throttling the entire Harem I just sat quietly as Quatre showed me the source of a friend’s web site, which taught me how to create a link outside the iframe to change the content within the iframe.

Having solved that problem we moved on to the Lavender Room. I had long ago promised myself that James and I would spend at least an hour a day getting the archives to look like the rest of the site, and to finally get the large pile of fanfics we’ve accumulated uploaded. However, because the site’s new(ish) look is a bit more fancy than the old it requires a little more work to maintain. So I’ve been putting it off and putting it off and… and has anyone else noticed I’ve managed to put it off for more than a year? Now that’s quality procrastination! *grin* Anyhow, I’ve been putting it off and yesterday I was thinking “There’s got to be an easier way!” That’s when I was thwapped upside the head. None of the Harem will ‘fess up so the boys have lost their toys for a few days, but I did learn I had once again overlooked the obvious: iframes. *sheepish grin*
Since I had nothing better to do today than to march in a parade and sleep the rest of the day (because marching for an hour or two, spinning a flag, takes a lot out of me), I was up for awhile last night working on the iframe width. Unfortunately I can only make the frame so wide and it’s not wide enough to accommodate the text at it’s current size, so I’ll have to reduce the font, but I’m still elated that the solution to several of my site issues has been found!!!!
